 “JAZZ ITALIANO” — a special concert by the PAUL JOSEPH TRIO
An enjoyable afternoon of Italian music will be presented by composer/pianist Paul Joseph and his jazz trio. You’ll hear inspiring instrumental jazz renditions of Italian favorites such as “O Sole Mio,” “Come Back to Sorrento,” “Finiculi, Finicula” as well as classical works from Vivaldi, Boccherini and Puccini opera. The group has concertized extensively the past several years doing a variety of thematic programs. The Paul Joseph Trio is known for its unique jazz arrangements of classical music, as exemplified in their performance with New York’s Nova Philharmonic of “Mozart Meets Jazz.” As well as their Classical Jazz programming, they’ve concertized extensively the past several years doing a variety of American Songbook composer-theme programs featuring Gershwin, Rodgers, Porter, Kern, Ellington and even holiday jazz. The PJQ’s dynamic rhythm section consists of drummer Danny Borg and bassist Yuta Tanaka, both seasoned performers.

Symphonic composer & pianist Paul Joseph has taken enthusiastic audiences on an inspiring musical journey through the passionate world of his classically-oriented compositions in orchestral and ballet performances, as well as solo piano concerts.  His compositions have been performed by many orchestras nationally including the Queens Symphony Orchestra led by world renowned maestro Arthur Fagen who states, “Paul Joseph is certainly a composer whose music deserves to be heard. His music has a beautiful, deep felt lyricism which has an immediate emotional impact upon its listeners.” Paul Joseph’s symphonic multidisciplinary extravaganza “The King of the Mask,” the lifelong reflection of celebrated Cuban artist Roman Valdes, has been choreographed and performed by Ballet Long Island and Dance Visions NY, with excerpts performed at Tilles Center. He has performed extensively throughout the Greater New York City Area, most recently as leader of his jazz quartet. The Paul Joseph Quartet is known for its unique jazz arrangements of classical music, as exemplified in their performance with New York’s Nova Philharmonic of “Mozart Meets Jazz.” As well as their Classical Jazz programming, they’ve concertized extensively the past several years doing a variety of American Songbook composer-theme programs featuring Gershwin, Rodgers, Porter, Kern, Ellington and even Irish, Italian and Holiday jazz. His patriotic song “The Land of the Human Dream” was performed Independence Day 2003 by the Bismark-Mandan Symphony on the steps of the North Dakota capital building. His orchestral “Cry of a Butterfly” was made into a nature music video by JFKA productions and the guitar arrangement has been recorded by the internationally acclaimed Italian virtuoso Fabrizio Ferraro. Danny Borg has made his mark as one of the most versatile musicians in the New York music circuit.  Comfortable in any setting, Danny can be found playing anywhere from jazz clubs, recording studios, and famous stages like Radio City Music Hall. Throughout his career, he has been privileged enough to share the stage and studio with a number of renowned musicians including Kenny Werner, Ron McClure, Ralph Lalama, Jimmy Owens, Nir Felder, James Wideman and New York Yankee legend and guitarist Bernie Williams. While completing his undergraduate degree at the New School University, Danny was on faculty teaching undergraduate students in private, classroom and ensemble settings. Danny is currently an adjunct professor of music at St. John’s University with a focus on songwriting, music history and percussion studies.

Yuta Tanaka, born and raised in Japan, is a bassist and composer with a background in jazz and Western Classical music. In 2009, he moved from Kobe, Japan, to New York to pursue a music career. Aside from being an active bass player at classical and jazz venues in the New York area and Japan,
he publishes original music arrangements under YUTATANAKASOUND. He graduated from Aaron Copland School of Music with a Master of Music in composition, where he has earned multiple awards, including the George Perle Award. As an artist, he always seeks to indulge in crafting music he loves.
